Home

Risk assessment is an advanced instrument for decision support in the management of human exposure to environmental contaminants: biological, chemical and physical. It is multidisciplinary field which integrate environmental sciences, mathematics and statistics, engineering, biology, medicine, epidemiology, sociology, political science and planning in order to support decision making in public health. The aim is to cope with a wide spectrum of issues related to environmental risks, quality of life and human health.

The LARA set available resources for quantitative studies in exposure and risk asessment, probabilistic risk analysis, GIS and spatial analysis, prediction of environmental behavior and acute and chronic toxicity of hazardous chemicals.

The Laboratory of Environmental Biology (LBA) has infrastructure for conducting research in environmental microbiology and parasitology The laboratory has equipment such as biological safety cabinets, autoclaves, epifluorescence microscope, centrifuge, homogenizer solid , refrigerator and freezer, bacteriological incubators including homogenization platform, the washing station to perform the EPA 1623.1 method to determine Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The laboratory also has materials for conducting water sampling, sewage sludge, sewage, among other environmental matrices. The laboratory analysts are experienced in the implementation of all activities and present technical expertise the implementation of new techniques.

The LEHCA conduct studies on human exposure to environmental contaminants, such biomarkers, neurological and behavioral damage in individuals exposed to lead and other metals or emerging contaminants. Evaluation of risk exposure factors, concentrations of various metals and chemicals in blood and other tissues for occupational or environmental exposure.

Modelo de Estudo para Avaliar o Impacto de Patógenos Entéricos em Mananciais de Abastecimento Público

Tem por objetivo a aplicação de metodologias de avaliação de risco microbiológico como controle de qualidade dos processos de captação e tratamento de águas destinadas ao abastecimento público e de consumo humano em áreas periurbanas de RMSP. A Organização Mundial da Saúde tem enfatizado a importância da utilização das metodologias de avaliação de risco microbiológico como ferramenta efetiva no controle de qualidade no processo de produção de água segura à população desde a captação até a sua distribuição aos usuários. .

Utilização da avaliação quantitativa de risco microbiológico (AQRM) na estimativa da probabilidade de infecção associado à prática de aplicação de biossólidos no solo.

A prática de aplicação de biossólidos no solo e em cultivos agrícolas está se tornando cada vez mais atrativa, no entanto suscita preocupações quanto aos efeitos agudos e crônicos que essa prática pode trazer para a saúde humana e ao ambiente em decorrência da presença de patógenos em sua composição. A Avaliação Quantitativa de Risco Microbiológico (AQRM) configura-se em uma ferramenta considerada fundamental para se estimar a probabilidade de infecção em uma determinada população exposta a agentes etiológicos em cenários específicos. O objetivo do projeto de pesquisa é o de avaliar a qualidade sanitária de biossólidos com potencial para utilização em solo agrícola, de acordo com a Resolução CONAMA 375/2006, e estimar a probabilidade de infecção por Salmonella e Ascaris lumbricoides associada a essa prática.

Estudo da relação entre doenças respiratórias e cardiovasculares e poluição veicular nas regiões metropolitanas do Estado de São Paulo.

A poluição do ar emitida pelas fontes veiculares é atualmente um dos principais problemas ambientais nas regiões metropolitanas, representando importante risco à saúde humana. Muitos estudos mostram associação entre doenças respiratórias e cardiovasculares e exposição a contaminantes atmosféricos. Este projeto tem por objetivo analisar os dados de morbidade hospitalar e de volume de tráfego nas vias urbanas dos municípios das três Regiões Metropolitanas do Estado de São Paulo buscando identificar a potencial associação entre emissão veicular e incidência de doenças respiratórias e cardiovasculares. Serão conduzidos estudos de caso-controle e um sistema de informação será desenvolvido para subsidiar as ações de vigilância em saúde e ambiente..

  1. Quantitative methods of exposure assessment
    Objectives: methods for estimating dose (exposure); probabilistic exposure assessment methods; identification and assessment of the environmental transport of biological, chemical and physical agents; study and survey of population exposure factors; characterization of sensitive groups.

  2. Quantitative microbiological risk assessment – QRMA
    Objectives: environmental exposure to pathogenic organisms (viruses, bacteria, parasites); study and development of dose-response models for population and sensitive groups; applying QRMA for reuse water; biosolids in agriculture; water for human consumption.

  3. Risk assessment of exposures to chemical agents
    Objectives: non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects associated to low dose rates; applying to contaminated land; air contaminants; pesticide residues in food and water.

  4. Uncertainty analysis in risk assessment
    Objectives: methods of identification and analysis of variability and uncertainty in models; probabilistic methods: Monte Carlo, Bootstrap; probabilistic distribution of exposure parameters and dose-response; statistical data analysis in risk assessment.

  5. Natural and technological disasters
    Objectives: quantitative estimation methods for exposure assessment in chemical accidental. Transport risk assessment of dangerous goods; integrated risk assessment of large industrial sites; mapping of vulnerability associated with technological and natural disasters.

  6. Risk management and decision making
    Objectives: methods for criteria in order to define tolerable risks and quality standards; cost-benefit analysis; social distribution of risks and benefits; analysis of environmental conflicts and risk perception.

  7. Public involvement in environmental risks management
    Objective: qualitative approaches addressed to inclusion of local knowledge, professional experience and social actors.

  8. Toxicology in Silico
    Objective: models in silico for environmental performance; prediction of human exposure and toxicity applying in silico models for chemical safety.

Objectives

  • Promote and integrate interdisciplinary research in exposure and risk assessment to human health addressed for the process of decision making;
  • Develop and implement quantitative and qualitative approaches to assessing exposure and risk associated with pathogenic agents, hazardous chemicals and other agents present in the environmental media: air, water, soil, food, biosolids, among others;
  • Develop an integrated approach that considers environmental sensitive populations and social experience;
  • Integrate the knowledge produced and provide researchers and decision makers a forum to exchange ideas and information about risks.
