Admission: criteria and procedures

The selection of applicants to the Masters’ and Doctoral Programs occurs yearly and in two phases. The first phase consists in English and Portuguese written (eliminating) examinations. The English examination means to assess text understanding and the Portuguese exam assesses text understanding and writing. Applicants who present a certificate of having passed intermediary and advanced exams such as TOEFL, TOEIC and IELTS when submitting their application can ask to be exempted from the English examination.
The second phase of the admission process is conducted by the research lines of the Program, based on the following documents:
• Undergraduate program academic record for those applying to a master’s program and Master’s program academic record for those applying to a doctoral program;
• Copy of the Lattes CV – register here, in case of not having it;
• Statement of intent explicitating the reasons leading to taking a graduate program;
• Pre-research project compatible with one of the Program research lines, which allows assessing the applicant’s ability to present a coherent work proposal (Pre-project Model);
• Applicants to doctoral programs have to present a proof of submission or publication of a scientific paper in a peer-reviewed journal, book or book chapter related to their master thesis.
At this phase, the applicant may be summoned to an interview. Applicants obtaining 60% or greater approval in both examinations in the first phase of the admission process in former years may, according to the Program Coordination judgment, be exempted from this examination and apply directly to the second phase at the Graduate Program Secretariat.
Application period, value of application fee, place of examinations and selection schedule will be specified in an edict published in the State of São Paulo Official Gazette and published on this site.
Those applying directly to a doctoral program (without taking a master’s program) have to apply as such to the same admission process. Besides the requirements aforementioned, for having their scientific maturity assessed, they will have to partially or fully prove the following items:
I. Professional experience, recorded in their Lattes CV which highlights their participation in research projects and consequent authorship and co-authorship of scientific papers published in qualified journals, books and book chapters; and/or;
II. Scientific initiation training, proven by the occurrence of all the following conditions:
a) being granted a Scientific Initiation Grant from fostering agents not belonging to the university where they took their undergraduate program;
b) compatible academic performance;
c) publication or acceptance of scientific paper in a peer-reviewed journal, or publication of books or book chapters, in the knowledge area, preferably having the applicant as the first author.
See the edict of the last admission process.
